Valentine's Day

Dear parents,

Our Valentine's Day celebration was a success. Students arrived at school wearing festive red shirts, socks, and hair accessories. They created necklaces made of beads with Ms. Aguilar. The students also passed out valentines to their classmates. They were pleased to read their valentines from their friends. The class enjoyed Valentine's Day at The Academy of Saint Priscilla at Divine Savior.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Polar Bears

Dear parents,

Elisha prepared a science lesson demonstrating how polar bears keep warm. She accessed our prior knowledge about polar bears. Next, she presented a poster she created with photographs and facts about them. The class helped Elisha create blubber with ziplock bags and crisco. The blubber, animal fat, enables polar bears to conserve heat. Then, students touched snow contained in a cooler. Elisha placed the blubbler, ziplock bags with crisco, inside the snow. Every student determined that the animal fat allows the polar bear to stay warm in their environment. Finally, the students decorated pictures of polar bears.

100th Day

Dear parents,

Students were delighted by the 100th day activities. They tie dyed a t-shirt with Ms. Aguilar in art class. Our classroom created 100th day glasses and sang a 100th day song. The students also admired the 100th day posters hanging in the hallway. Teachers and students took pleasure in our 100th day of school celebration.

Community Worker Show-and-Tell

Dear Parents,

The students brought in great items for our show-and-tell today.  The students enjoyed hearing about what the item was, who uses it, and why the community worker needs it.

Donovan brought in a Goniometer used by physical therapists.  It measures the range of motion of a body joint.
Michael brought in a Stereo (fly) test and 3D Glasses, which an Ophthamlic Technician uses to test depth perception.

Carys brought in a shingle and described how a roofer uses them.

Bella brought in a few objects.  First, she brought in a surgical mask and cap that a nurse would use.  Then, she brought in a police badge and police patches.

Every student looked at the police patches.  Everyone is holding up a police patch in this photograph.

Elisha also brought in a stethoscope and listened to a few students' heartbeats.

Mary Grace brought in two items an Iron Worker needs, a tape measure and metal bracket which helps holds buildings together.

Christina brought in an airplane to talk about pilots.

Nicholas showed us a stethoscope that nurses use to listen to heart and lungs.

Nino showed us photographs of SCBA mask and described how they worked.  The masks are used by Fire Fighters to breathe through the smoke.  He even gave facts about the mask.

Chase brought in a real Fire Fighter's helmet.  It was quite heavy.

Angelica talked about how a baker makes muffins and the students got to eat a muffin.  She even sent some muffins home with the students.

Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser

Dear Parents,

Our Spaghetti Dinner was a success because of all the parents and students who attended.  We enjoyed food donated from Vince's Restaurant, located at 4747 North Harlem Ave. in Harwood Heights.   There was even a split the pot raffle.  Again, thank you to everyone who came to the Spaghetti Dinner.  Below are a few photographs of students at the fundraiser.

Scientist of the Week

Dear Parents,

The students were able to explore surface tension with scientist Christina.  She poured milk into a container.  Then, she dripped colored dye into the milk.  She dipped a q-tip into laundry detergent and placed it into the milk.  The colors moved away from the place they were before.  Each student was able to try this on their own.  The students had a lot of fun.  Enjoy the photographs of the class below.

Groundhog Day

Dear Parents,

The class discussed Groundhog Day.  If the groundhog sees his shadow, then there will be six more weeks of winter.  If the groundhog does not see his shadow, then spring is on its way.  The groundhog DID NOT SEE HIS SHADOW!  This means that spring is on its way.

Community Unit

Dear Parents,

On Tuesday, February 1st the class created a map of our community.  They colored houses, buildings, cars, people, and even animals for our Norridge map.  Below are photographs of our students creating our community and the finished product.  The Norridge map is now in the hallway.

On Monday, February 7th students will bring an item for our community show and tell.  Please remind your child to bring in an item.

Photographs from December

Dear Parents,

Below are photographs of the students enjoying their treat for bringing back their report card envelope.  Students are snacking on animal crackers and apple juice.  It was pajama day too!
