Dear Parents,
Maddie was the scientist of the week. She demonstrated that if you put a pin into the side of the balloon, it will pop. If you put the pin (with some petroleum jelly on it) into the top of the balloon, it will not. The rubber at the ends of the balloon are not as stretched as the rubber on the sides. The rubber in the balloon consists of molecules linked closely together. If the force or tension is too much, it will break. There isn't much tension at the top of the balloon. Thanks Maddie!
Respectfully,
Rachel Sibick
